ORGASMIC EATS

Dave, Pam & Me @ Momofuku Noodle Bar
So this wonderful entry is going to be mainly about the food I ingested this week.  I honestly apologize in advance to the food lovers out there!  I was on the other side of this coin recently, when Jay posted an amazing looking pizza pie from Lombardi's in Little Italy while I was working, and it made me incredibly envious (and hungry!)  So, I'm sorry, really, but it's not gonna stop me from showcasing my culinary conquests.
homemade Egg & Cheese
It began with a homemade breakfast sammie... not just any breakfast sammie, mind you, but one NY-bodega-inspired egg and cheese sandwich (since it was homemade i had no bacon or sausage to add).  I bought the roll nearby and of course it was beautiful looking.  Shout-out to Mr. Adam Tesler for always showing his love for the 'kaiser roll'... i have a new found appreciation for them since eating their fluffy and delectable east coast cousins every day.
Fried oyster sams from The Dutch
Then Mr. Robert Schmidt (aka bob, aka jays' roomie in my absence) came into town for work and I met him at The Dutch in Soho.  I guess it borders the southern west village... I absolutely love these manhattan neighborhooditas and how I have such a better grasp on them... of course it helps that i'm obsessed with maps, but it's fun to navigate!  This restaurant was recommended to me from Laura awhile ago and I finally made it.  Delicious stuff, great drinks and fun atmosphere.  Featured here are the fried oyster sliders... delectable!  Bob and I wined and dined then I guided him over to the East Village where we slummed it at the Horse Box, with Dave, in classic EV fashion!

pork belly buns!  we each got one!

I'll move on to the next night, Momofuku special treatment night!  I know I know, I already had a post about momofuku noodle bar on here, but this is different, trust me.  Back then I barely stumbled upon the legacy, ate solo at the bar, chose my entree conservatively (classic ramen noodle soup) and had a solitary yet deep experience.  This time around, we were with Pam!  Pam is Dave Moore's good friend from traveling abroad (i think) during their architecture undergrad... They stayed friends in NY & now Pam's fiance is the sous chef for Momofuku noodle bar.  Tim is an incredible guy!  Not only is he uber generous, but he's fascinated by all the ways to cook eggs... which totally fascinates me!  Soy sauce egg anyone??  So although i was so proud of dining solo the last time around, walking right through the crowd of hungry people waiting and sitting at the bar with excellent service, this time around we were royalty!  The wait was going to be 40 minutes; as soon as Pam showed up, we walked in, the hostess and waitresses recognized her, parted the ways and seated us immediately.  Dave and I were super impressed!!!

Amazing take on snow peas
Needless to say, we ordered 75% of the menu (inventive specials change every week) and then Tim hooked us up with the other 25%.  We indulged loudly with little grace but happy faces.  Here are a series of pics taken from our ostentatious meal!

To wrap up my incredible week of yummy goodness, my producer at work, Drew, and I ventured out to a two hour lunch on Friday in search of the New York jewish mecca.  DELI.  We trekked it to the Upper West Side, which isn't that far from us since we work on 57th and 10th.  When we emerged on 79th and Broadway, I saw sandy-colored parisian buildings, green trees lining the center of the boulevard and way less traffic then I was used to thus far.  Ahh, this place is pleasant!  I think I like the upper west side!  I had a couple delis written down in the neighborhood but we finally decided on Zabar's.  The counter in their small store is pretty limited with mostly breakfast items and prepackaged sandwiches.  Then I poke my head into their actual supermarket to see if we could score quality deli and I was pleasantly surprised...(after we had to fight the jewish elderly just to get down the aisles!)  They had an enormous cheese counter, take a number!, then in another room the meat counter, take a number! and on the opposite wall the fish counter, TAKE A NUMBER!
Roast beef, tongue & pastrami
Fresh cut, ready to package or make a sandwich to go.  We both went for typical sky-high meat sandwiches, in all their glory!  There was a guy giving out samples of salmon & when he saw me eying the containers of smoked white fish salad he opened one up and gave me a sample right then and there!  He was awesome.  I walked out with my mile-high sandwich on rye, a container of white fish pate, a container of chopped chicken liver pate & a bag of crackers!  P.S. it was the best damn chopped liver I've ever had next to my Grandma Babs' homemade stuff!  Insano.

coleslaw in the center of the meats so bread doesn't get soggy!
We walked back to work that afternoon, because otherwise we might have keeled over and died... (don't worry, I only ate half of this sandwich!)  Drew raved about his favorite chocolate chip cookie spot in the city that we just happened to be walking by so we just happen to stop in.

I honestly didn't believe him when he described how incredible these fresh baked cookies were, until I started down the Levain Bakery basement stairs and the familiar whiff hit me like a factory of childhood memories.  COOKIES!!!  Then i saw them.  They were softball size mounds of dough, placed neatly on trays upon trays upon trays.  Could this just be one cookie!?

Levain choco chip cookies pre-baked
Drew assured me that 1 was all we needed and i assured him that we could split it.  After we got our ginormous cookie that could have been easily mistaken for a large scone, we walked with it warm on the wax paper, down Amsterdam Ave.  I took the first bite because Drew is a gentleman, and because I think he couldn't wait to see my reaction.  Hands down, the most delicious chocolate chip cookie I have ever tasted!  And because it was so tall and thick a good part of the inside was half cooked and damn scrumptious!  I was immediately energized by the happiness this cookie provided, or maybe it was the sugar.  Regardless, I'll never forget Levain bakery!
In all it's baked glory (half-baked inside!!)

MUSIC, TriBeCa & SILVERI/BUSCH DINNER PARTY

I went to a concert!  It was just what I needed to round out my semi-hipster city-dwelling persona!  Dave, Pat and Tom were on a live music kick and bought tix to this band who P & T just saw at South by Southwest in Austin, Trampled by Turtles.  They're a blue-grassy band made up of strings and harmonicas and they pack a lot of punch!  I planned on buying a ticket at the door if I could get out of work at a reasonable hour.  Coincidentally, Bridget Kessler called me seeing if I'd like to go see the same concert!  So, I had the two groups meet before I even got there... and it was good times at the charming Webster Hall in the East Village.  It's an old school theater, standing only mid-size venue. It reminded me of a slightly more spacious Henry Fonda Theater (aka The Music Box), but not as big as The Wiltern Theater in LA.

It's getting warmer and warmer, summer is almost here... This is a snap shot I took leaving work on Friday night.  Walking east to the subway, I turned back towards my office on 11th Ave and the brilliant sunset glow off the hudson almost made me forget I was constantly surrounded by tall buildings.  I even thought I saw a palm tree...

That Saturday, post downtown jog, I went down to Chambers St to meet Dave during his lunch break for a little TriBeCa exploration!!  I hadn't been down to the area yet and since he works right there, and had a Saturday work ethic, he was an excellent tour guide!  I saw some big old government buildings including the two mammoth courthouses off of Chambers.
Rockefeller Park

We walked west through the adorable family-oriented Tribeca neighborhoods, past farmers markets and playgrounds... this is where the rich yet hip new yorkers raise their families... ahh there they are!  Yuppies!  Dave led me through Rockefeller Park along the westside, which leads into Battery Park... past Jenn, Jacqui & Bridget's infamous Stuyvesant High School.  The sun was shining, the water was glistening and people were laying out in the park by the hundreds!

He led me back into the heart of downtown, around the new Freedom Tower slowing rising up from ground zero and into the financial district.  We said our adieus and i did a lil Wall Street exploring.  I especially love this picture on the left of the old church against the new skyscrapers!

On my way back home, I stopped in this little Pierogi Shop around the corner where an old polish guy hand makes about half a dozen types of pierogis and sells them uncooked.  He barely spoke english but when i cooked his potato, onion & cheese pierogis as well as his mushroom and saurkraut ones... I was a believer!!

That evening, Dave and I had a delicious dinner date at Kyle and Doug's adorable home in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.  They graciously greeted us, wine glasses in hand.

susie homemaker, making dat home!

Kyle's pesto and little hats!  Manja!
It felt so nice to be in a friends' home, chillaxing, eating a home cooked meal, it was so out of character for me!  And let me tell you, Kyle brought me back to suburbia in the most delicious way!  She made fresh pesto pasta and incredible cheesecake (i need me a mixmaster!!) with real gram cracker crust and diced strawberries.  Yummerz!!!  The rain came suddenly, pounding through her open bedroom windows, so we stuck around in the comfort of their second story apartment, swapping stories and playing with their little kitten Dagney.  She liked me, of course!  It was a lovely lovely evening in Brooklyn.

INCREDIBLE homemade cheesecake by KYLE!  sooo good!

Hipstamatic Trailblazers

April 14th I went down to Pennsauken, NJ to visit with mom and dad-in-laws.  It was another beautiful weekend and we had a lot of fun outside.  I also got a chance to try out my hipstomatic app on my iphone.

After a delicious home-made cheesesteak from Franny, Noel Sr took me on a classic springtime bike ride.

Papa Conks Cruising
We rode North through Cinnaminson and then Northeast into Moorestown to peek the mansions on sprawling front lawns.  The harley was undoubtedly a smooth, comfortable ride!

Then we headed back West across route 130 to Riverton, which is, along the River, clever aye.  All the houses along the river walk are adorable with big porches and lots of windows.

We scooted South along the river, tons of people were out - walking and fishing, then we headed back East across rt 130 onto Union Ave and back at the humble abode.  Franny was preparing an amazing meal of veal shanks stuffed with prosciutto, fontina cheese and asparagus in a tomato-ey sauce... i'm bummed i gobbled it up too quickly to get a photo!  When we got back from the bike ride though both Aunties were there to greet me and cousin John who's recently recovering from (different than) lap-band surgery and is shedding the weight like a champ!  Way to go John!!

So they sent me back up to New York with 2 veal shanks in hand and a belly full of tangy lemon meringue pie!  It was divine!!

Great trip all in all!

SATISFIED.

Sometimes there are so many options you can’t seem to pick any of them… that’s how I am at restaurants with big menus, i.e. Cheesecake Factory, and living here, in the East Village.   Walking the streets home from Astor Place subway station I pass countless eateries and bars all colorful, shiny and each one unique from the other; on top of that I have a long list, to say the least, of must-try restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn so lovingly provided by friends here and there… and everyday it keeps getting longer.  I’m trying not to obsess over needing to go to all of them, but it just happens.  And I have an irrational fear of wasting a meal on a mediocre choice… sometimes it’s the sub-par restaurant and sometimes it’s just the entrée I choose.  Jay likes to call it ‘entrée envy’ especially if I’m brooding over the fact that I should have ordered my first instinct, or worse, what he’s having.  It’s ridiculous, I know.  Ahh but I digress.
So here in this city, I have hit up several very satisfactory spots in the past 5 weeks, but definitely not enough because at the rate I’m going I’ll never get through everyone’s recommendations and all the eye candy I see on my own.  In my neighborhood alone there’s pockets of ‘little Poland/Ukraine”  “little Japan/Korea”  & “Little India”  I simply HAVE to sample them all!  A couple weeks ago, after Dave turned me down for Indian food twice, I stopped in a pretty blue Indian restaurant 5 blocks away and ordered take out.   Even though I couldn’t make up my mind and basically ordered 2 entrees, it was delicious and lasted me 3 meals worth.
My seat at the bar!

But tonight walking home the three blocks on St. Marks Place, I was having a particularly hard time making a dinner decision.  I actually stood in front of a tiny diner on 2nd ave for 5 minutes because they had perogies on the menu and seemed polish-esq… but I decided sitting and waiting for pergoies to go at the counter of this dismal looking space wasn’t what I really wanted to do. I had to pick up my laundry I dropped off 3 days ago and bring it home, so I had more time to think about dinner.  My usual yet partner-in-eating-crime was watching the basketball game uptown so I was on my own.  Hmm, there’s a Vietnamese ‘ban mi’ sandwich place across the street I’ve never tried, but man I’d love to cross those perogies off my list, but I pass sooo many crowded ramen houses on St. Marks every night… maybe I should just hop in one of those – I could bring my kindle and not look too weird… but oh that irrational fear of mediocre establishment sets in.  YELP to the rescue!  I get home and look up ramen in the East Village.  What do you know? The number one place on the list is Momofuku Noodle Bar with four stars. ****  I’ve read of this magical Momofuku empire… Molly recently posted an article about the Momofuku Milk Bar, a dessert haven, and from that I learned of their other establishments, all in my vicinity.  This is so perfect, I’m in the mood for ramen, I can cross something off my list that’s nearby, and I don’t have to wait for someone to be available to join me.
loosening the noodles
I walk three little blocks to the Noodle Bar with no signage; I’ve passed this a million times and never knew what it was!   There are 4 groups waiting when I walk in,  This place did seem to be pretty trendy at the moment, I mean it’s a Wednesday night.  I go right up to the hostess and say “One,”  “Just you?”  “Just me!” “Right this way”.  She leads me through the crowd, oh the power!  I could get used to this whole dining solo thing!  She sits me at the last open seat of the long bar and I’m in heaven.
Momofuku Ramen!  Yummers
Young, hustling sous chefs are placing perfectly poached eggs, breaking up noodles with their hands, mixing broth rapidly with chop sticks, squeezing bottles of oil and delicious sauces onto pork and chicken already cooking on the grill.  Yum!  I kept going from reading two lines in my book to snapping iphone photos, back to the kindle,  to sending said photos to friends and facebook, back to kindle and back to snapping off even more photos!  I went with the Momofuku Ramen.  Although I heard their pork buns are to die for, I had to go with the signature ‘noodle’ item… it has pork butt and pork shoulder… poached egg, lil of this, lil of that.  It was delicious, flavorful and oh so satisfying!  Plus I made a ton of people drool on facebook so that was a lil satisfying too, truthfull.  All in all, a memorable New York Wednesday.
Soft-poached eggs
Also I learned a new very interesting way to poach an egg, or I should say, soft poach an egg!  Poach it still in its shell, in a tray of water in the OVEN, and crack it open slowly over a bowl so you don’t break the semi-cooked egg as it comes out.  I was so impressed I talked to the sous chef about it!  Watch out Mer, this embarrassing talker-to-strangers is nipping at your heels!
Next I’ll try the Ssam Bar for the juicy pork butt, no inuendos intended!

RANDOS

I barely watch any TV here, I’m just realizing as I turn on the Daily Show for the first time all week.  I read so much more and my commute is pretty damn enjoyable in contrast to LA roads..  I’d like to really soak this all in and figure out how to make my life at home more like this city life…  I can do it, somehow.

This is my morning view waking up in my bedroom.   I’m sleeping with an eye mask now to keep the early morning light out of my eyes.

This was an incredible soviet-take on brunch… Veselka’s homemade corned beef hash and eggs with a potato latka-type thing on the side.  That’s before I had to go to work, on a Sunday!

A sunny day walking to work!  I went iced!

Just a lil drilling in the road near Astor Place, on my way to my subway.  These guys set up shop just about anywhere, they own the streets.

My Prodrewcer at McSorely’s ale house after we turned in our show’s 1st pass to the boss man, quite the feat…  we had a few darks and lights.  Oy oy oy
